Christian fasting and prayer stories

Why do you think fasting is important?

There are numerous instances in the Bible where a fast was called in order to hear from God or be delivered from a threat.

When the disciples attempted to cast out a demon from a young boy, they were unsuccessful and Jesus told them that some things required prayer and fasting. (Matthew 17:16-21)

These examples have led to me making fasting a regular part of my life's journey.

What does your personal fasting practice look like?

I have fasted during the month of January for at least 21 days for several years now. I have also added fasting throughout the year, sometimes for a day, a week, or several weeks. I generally follow the Daniel fast at least once or twice.

I have fasted by not eating for a day, and I have fasted caffeine, bread, sweets, and sugar for a month. I have also fasted TV and social media for a period of time.

What is your biggest challenge when it comes to fasting?

My biggest challenge can be getting rid of distractions so that I can spend as much time as possible in God's word and in prayer.

Scheduling household chores, time with family, and unexpected interruptions can eat into the time I desire to spend with the Lord.

Christian prayer and fasting

Can you recall a time God gave you a breakthrough, revelation, or taught you something through fasting?

Every time I've fasted I have come away with a blessing. In 2022 when I started the year with a 28-day Daniel fast, the Lord gave me a revelation about the Holy Spirit's power and my need to give Him more attention throughout each day.

Over the years, He was there to help me in various situations but I was not taking advantage of His presence in my life.

By spending more time reading my Bible, praying, and striving to be obedient, I seek His presence more and can sense His leading.

During my most recent fast, the Lord taught me to not feel I have to have the last word when I feel I am right about something. Although I have to keep working at it, it has already brought me more peace

What is your best advice for someone new to fasting?

Take small steps and seek the Holy Spirit's help to get you through it. The Lord will be pleased by your efforts and will reward you for them.

He may not answer your prayers the way you want Him to, but He loves you and has your best interests at heart. The more you fast and pray, the more spiritual growth you will experience.

What is your favorite Daniel Fast meal or recipe?

I like incorporating smoothies in my fast using plant-based protein, fruit, and/or nut butters. I also like beans so I consume them in different recipes a lot when I fast.

Any additional info, tips, scriptures, or reflections you would like to share?

One of my favorite scriptures is Jeremiah 29:11,

"For I know the plans I have for you, says the LORD, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, to give you a future and a hope.”

What an awesome promise from the Lord, our God!
